The guest judge tonight was Mary Murphy who spoke a little about being in Jason Gilkison's show (he gave her the thumbs up for her dancing but she wondered if she was on the hot tamale train).
First up was Nick and Grace with a dancehall routine by Tiana (I think her surname has changed, she must have got married). They were boxing and Nick was Grace's trainer. Mary loved it and put them on the hot tamale train. The judges thought Nick was like fish in water and Grace hit it hard. As for me, I thought Nick is so hot in this! He was effortless with the HH. I didn't look at Grace at all, I'll try when I watch the video later!
Carly and Kieran performed a waltz by some new choreographers (Aric and partner?), they were ghosts in a haunted house. There was an issue where Carly's heel got caught in her dress and the judges said they could tell in her face when it happened and it ruined the flow. They also said said Kieran's the guy to beat in the competition, they did critique that Carly's line and shoulders weren't right. Jason pushed a bit much and mentioned the heel again and Carly started crying. I thought Kieran was gorgeous. I just enjoyed watching him. I think Carly did the best she could but I would have loved for him to have a different partner here. The dress getting caught in her heel certainly didn't help but Jason didn't need to bring it up again, at least Mary said how this had happened to her many times. (I'm being the nice judge tonight to make up for Jason's grumpiness tonight about almost everything!)
Doug and Jess were up next with a jazz routine by Adam Williams. They were egyptian mummies that woke up. The judges thought they hit it hard and ooze confidence they hadn't yet in their previous routines. Matt and Mary said that Jess stole the routine. Jason revealed the fact that when they originally paired the two together they were meant to be the golden team since both were strong dancers, however he has yet to see them reach the potential and hopes he had for them and thought tonights routine was on the way but not quite there yet. I thought Jess was hot. Doug didn't do anything for me. But did I mention Jess was hot?! I was so drawn to her in this.
Phillipe and Renee had a contemporary routine with Debbie Ellis. It was interesting to see how hard Debbie pushes the dancers, it certainly works given the amazing results she gets every time! The routine was about letting go in a relationship. Mary said Renee is just the dancer and Phillipe dance with heart and soul. Jason loved it and all the judges thought Phillipe was excellent for a hip hop dancer and Renee was finally at ease and confident. Oh how I love Debbie Ellis... don't ever leave us! The camera work did let this down a bit but she really pushed these two to their limits and they were amazing. Very surprised with Phillipe who I have not rated so far... I think he's a bit of a dark horse, he seems to be coping with everything... and Renee shone in this, it was so nice to see her just be herself, I really warmed to her again here. Amazing routine overall.
Heath and Jessica's routine was a tango and they were Mr and Mrs Smith (Brad and Angelina). Mary thought Heath was not strong enough and his foot work was wrong and she expected more from Jessica. Jason thought it was no Angelina and Brad. Matt thought Jessica lack intensity while Heath had it but not enough. I must have been watching a different show to the judges because I enjoyed this very much. Okay I'm a Heath fan so perhaps that's part of it but I thought they did very well overall and I thought there was chemistry too. No 'sizzle' though, I mean it wasn't hot like it could be and there were a few shaky moments but I honestly have no idea why the judges were all so harsh. I really thought Mary would like this more but I got the feeling she didn't like Heath.
Jessie and Matt's hip hop was next, it was choreographed by Travers Ross. They were like representatives of earth asking questions about pollution in the world and I think the clothes were supposed to represent the burdens of society (well I didn't quite 'get it' there but he said something about this I think). Mary, Bonnie and Matt all liked it other than some slight unison issues. However to Jason it was like Picasso. Some people get it and think it is a master of work while others totally don't. Unfortunately he doesn't. I actually really liked this.. I can't believe I'm saying this as it's Travers.. but I will say that I think it's the only thing he's done that has translated properly to the SYTYCD stage. I think this is due to Jessie and Matt to be honest because they nailed it. For me it was a really interesting piece and they were really on fire despite Matt's foot problem. Jason was incredibly rude - sure we've all said some horrible things about Travis in the past on here but he's a judge and I don't think it was necessary for him to be so harsh on TV like that. If you don't get it, fine, but it just seemed rude to me.
Issi and Don's contemporary was next with Sarah Boulter. After they drew contemporary from the hat they had to chat to Sarah who influenced whether Issi would be able to do the routine or not, she decided to alter it and change the lifts to acommodate the problem with her ribs. In fact, she said she changed the majority of the routine. In the routine, Issi was addicted to Opium and Don is her conscience trying to get her back. Matt and Mary thought Don's flaws ruined what could have a been a fabulous routine. But he was very caring in his lifts and helping Issi. Mary said Issi looked angelic and loved watching her dance. This was a shame. I don't really know what to say here... I love Sarah's choreography and I think the fact that she took a risk and changed the lifts completely for Issi shows that she really wanted to try to keep Issi in the comp but I don't think it worked. I don't think this is Sarah's fault at all though, I just felt like Don was terrified of lifting her and Issi was very shaky and for me the routine just didn't go anywhere. Like I said.. a shame.. it could have been brilliant if one of the other couples had it. Issi disappointed me and Don didn't get the technique (which was expected anyway). I know Issi has trouble with her ribs so I'll go back to being the nice judge and not say anymore here!
Ivy and Robbie were last to perform in a jazz routine by Jet. Ivy was the ice queen, Robbie was her jester. The audience went crazy for this one, Mary gave first class Hot tamale train tickets out. The judges felt this was the best Ivy had danced and loved the routine. This was a lot of fun and I know I'm going to enjoy rewatching this one many times over! I get the feeling it was an audience favourite, it must have been great to be in the crowd for it. The routine suited them both perfectly, I must admit though I prefer Ivy with her beautiful long brunette locks but she was so hot here and I can't believe it.. she and Robbie actually worked.. they seem to have hit it off with the right chemistry. The lifts she did especially at the end were insane! I was just so happy to see Ivy shine and the partnership not fail like I thought it might!
The Sydney Dance Company also performed before the end of the show and Nat spoke to the head of the company who will be choreographing in a few weeks. There was a sneak preview of the Bangarra Dance company choreographer who is creating the group routine for tomorrow night. The results will air tomorrow night at 8pm, Adam Lambert is also performing.
